how to spot overheating on a monster 796?

Got a 2014 Monster 796 and it's my first air-cooled bike. Just moved somewhere that stays close to 100°F most of the summer, and now I'm wondering how you even know when these things are overheating. On liquid-cooled bikes you've got gauges and lights, but the Monster doesn't really tell you much until it's already cooking.

I'm not planning on racing it in traffic, but if I get stuck in stop-and-go, should I be worried? Or are these engines tougher than I'm giving them credit for? I do have a Multistrada 1200S I could use for errands, but I'd rather keep racking miles on the Monster if it's fine with the heat.

I had the same worry last year when I moved to Phoenix with my 796. These bikes are strong, but they do get really hot in traffic. Since there's no temp gauge, you have to pay attention, if the engine feels rough, the clutch acts weird, or you smell hot oil, it's time to stop and let it cool.

They’re pretty tough, but heat management is more about common sense with the air cooled bikes. If you’re stuck in traffic and it starts smelling hot or idling rough, that’s your cue to get some airflow moving
