hoosing a Ducati ST2 or ST3 for Sport Touring

I love my 2013 Monster 796 but I finally had to admit it is not built for long trips after a painful eight hour ride to Austin. I used to own a CBR1000F for touring and I have always regretted never picking up a Ducati ST3 before they were discontinued. I started looking at used listings and found plenty of ST2 and ST3 models ranging from total junk to pristine garage queens. I want to avoid the high maintenance costs and complexity of the ST4 because I am not looking for a project. But should I buy a twenty year old sport tourer or just spend the extra money on a modern Multistrada 950? And I really want to know if there is a specific year for the ST series that I should avoid or one that is considered the most reliable.

Ask the seller for the exact date of the last timing belt change because they need to be replaced every two years regardless of mileage.

Look for a 2004 or later ST3 if you want the improved wet clutch and better ergonomics.

Test the voltage regulator and charging system as these were common weak points on older Ducati models.

@jeeperkeeps Check the fuel tank for internal rust since these bikes have often sat for long periods in garages.
