Monster S2R 800 2006 ECU not recognizing neutral

I'm helping a co-worker with his 2006 Ducati Monster S2R 800. The bike shows neutral on the dash but the ECU status stays in "gear shifted," which blocks the starter relay. We tested the neutral switch and it's fine, so the issue looks like it's between the cluster and ECU. Has anyone confirmed if the S2R sends neutral to the ECU through the CAN line instead of a direct pin?

On the S2R 800 the neutral signal is a bit different from older carb models since the ECU does not always get a simple ground from the switch but instead relies on the cluster to interpret the switch and then pass that status along.

The wiring diagrams for the 2006 show the neutral switch feeding the dash and the ECU sees neutral through the communication line rather than a direct pin input.

Check continuity on the harness and make sure the cluster is actually broadcasting the neutral state is usually the next step before suspecting the ECU. That’s what I’ll do first thing.
