Training yourself to instinctively countersteer your motorbike is the fastest and surest means of changing direction and lifting your bike up straight. IMO countersteering is second only to mastery of the front brake for safe riding practices. Like most things, it must be practiced regularly to be instinctive.

You're doing well. Countersteering can feel strange at first but it gets easier with practice. When I taught my nephew on his Monster 620, we spent some time in a parking lot before he got the hang of it. Try using gentle pressure on the bars at moderate speeds and notice how your bike reacts. Pushing the right bar to go right and the left to go left helps the bike lean, which is what makes it turn. If you haven't already, find a straight, empty road and practice easing into the push. That's usually when riders start to get comfortable with the movement.
