Shifting Monster 696 engine to neutral on the bench

I currently have my Monster 696 engine sitting on the workbench for some repairs and I need to set the timing soon. The bike was in first gear when I removed the motor and I need to get it into neutral so I can turn the crankshaft freely. It is difficult to shift gears without the transmission spinning or the clutch lever connected. You usually need to rotate the output shaft by hand while you gently move the shifter to get the gears to slide into place. Does anyone have a specific method for finding neutral manually before I start putting everything back together? Hoping someone can help me.

What you can do is move the gear shaft with pedal or pliers upwards until neutral. Try that and let me know.

first, reinstall the external gear shift lever onto the engine's shift shaft. then slowly rotate the transmission's output shaft by hand. when the gears slide into place, you will feel a slight movement and possibly hear a faint click as it drops into the neutral position
