my brother is thinking about buying a used Ducati 797.
I saw it with him, it looks great, has all its service records, and only had two owners, but the seller says there's a problem, the check engine light comes on sometimes at high RPMs.

The seller already replaced the vacuum sensor, but the light still pops on. The price is only about 10% lower than other bikes, so my brother is wondering if it's worth the risk. Is this a common issue, and how hard would it be to fix? Any advice would be a huge help!

A check engine light can be a pain, and it's definitely something to be cautious about. The vacuum sensor is a good first guess.. so it's interesting the seller already replaced it. That might point to something else in the intake or throttle body or even other electrical issues. So honestly, a 10% discount for a known problem isn't much. You could be looking at a few hundred dollars to properly diagnose and fix it, especially if the seller can't provide a code. Then if it's something more complex like a wiring harness issue, it could get expensive fast! I'd tell your brother to pass on it unless they can get the code read and see exactly what's tripping the light. Without that info, it's a gamble, and that small discount won't cover a serious repair bill. There are plenty of good 797s out there without a mystery problem. Better to wait for a clean bike and have peace of mind!!

Funny enough, in all this, it could be something simple like wiring or as annoying as an ECU or air fuel issue and without pulling the actual code it's hard to know for sure. For just 10% off, maybe either push for a bigger discount or walk cos really there are plenty of clean Monsters out there without warning lights

A 10% discount isn't much if fixing the problem costs even more. If your brother knows Ducatis or has a good mechanic, it might be doable. If not, ask the seller for a diagnostic report. That info could seal or kill the deal.
