So after parting ways with my 996, I'm hunting for something easier on the back and wrists, and well the Ducati Monster line caught my eye, but I'm torn between the DS and the S4. It's really tough to find real-world comparisons, so I am putting this out here, if you've ridden both, I'd love to hear your thoughts

The 1000ds motorcycle line made its debut in 2003. This bike is often regarded as a better option for everyday use thanks to its wide ratio gearbox, which helps it handle various speeds quite efficiently. In addition, it delivers more power and performance in the mid-speed range compared to the S4 model, which features a close ratio gearbox instead. Plus, the 1000ds is slightly lighter, making it easier to maneuver. It also tends to be more affordable when it comes to maintaining valve clearances, helping to lower service costs
The DS is a bit more comfy with a laid-back feel, so your back and wrists will thank ya, the S4's got more power and that sexy liquid-cooled engine, but it's a bit stiffer on long rides. If you're after comfort, DS might be the way to go, but if you want that raw Ducati punch, the S4's got it
So it looks like the 1000ds might be a better fit for daily use and ease of maintenance
Comfort's definitely a priority for me, but I'm also drawn to that Ducati power...It looks like I've got some thinking to do

Have you investigated the S4RS motorbike? It may not matter a lot to some, but that bike embodies all the things that made Duc's legendary. It boasts:
- Full trellis frame (the hallmark of duc's for decades)
- Single-side swingarm (classic racing-based stuff with an unforgettable visual)
- Dry clutch (racing stuff, amazingly easy to repair/adjust, the rattle at idle is a ducati icon...)
- Ohlins suspenders front and back (Standard of the Industry and classic racing stuff)
- Forged aluminum Marchesini wheels (S4 has Marchesini sticker on Brembo cast wheels)
And, the coup de gras, the 998 Testa motor with four-valve Desmo heads which is just awesome, and makes better everything across the board. The Testa design has morphed into many larger motors (1098, 1198, etc.)
To me, the S4RS embodies all the classic stuff that ducatista's seek, all rolled-up in a bike that is an absolute blast to ride. Sounds, feel, handling, it's all there. If you have access to alcohol-free gas, the plastic tank works fine.
Sometimes difficult to keep that front wheel planted during brisk acceleration, though...
